So you’ve arranged for your furniture to be stored in a secure place. You may be keeping it for when your child moves out or maybe there’s no more space left at home. Either way, you will want to be able to keep your items clean while they are not in use.
There are many ways you can keep your items clean whilst they are in storage.
Clean items prior to storage
One of the easiest ways to keep your items clean is to make sure they are put into long term storage already clean. Begin first by wiping down your furniture with an appropriate cleaner. After this let your furniture breathe in a well-ventilated area.
Dismantle your items
If you are planning to store larger items, dismantling them can help to make storing your items much easier and can also help to maximise your storage space. For example, dismantling your bed frame can help to free up space. Simply label everything so you know which part goes where.
Plan ahead
If you know which items you are putting in storage and what size your storage unit will be, it is best that you plan how you will store them before placing them in. For example, if you have a lot of items you will want to store them with spaces left between them. So if you need an item from the back of the unit, then you will have no problem retrieving the item as you have left spaces for you to walk through.
Once you have decided which items are to go into storage making a list will help you plan the best use of the space available in the unit. For instance, if there items you think you may need to get at then plan to put them into the unit last so they are easy to find later on. Putting heavy things on the floor then stacking lighter items on top, making sure you use the full height of the unit, is another great way of keeping the cost of storage to a minimum as you pay for the floor area, not the height.
Protect
Finally and most importantly when planning your long term storage make sure that you protect your furniture with the appropriate covers. This could be plastic covers or cotton covers. Either way, they will stop dust from collecting on your furniture. This can help to protect the fabric and keep it fresh as the day you put it away.
